Aave DAO takes step closer V4 deployment with request for comment proposal

Aave DAO has passed its Aave Request for Comment proposal vote to begin discussions of deploying Aave V4 on the Ethereum mainnet, expected to roll out this year. The community measure closed after four days with 100% support, according to Aave’s governance platform

The ARFC represents the initial non-binding stage in Aave’s decentralized governance process, meant to refine proposals before advancing to a binding onchain Aave Improvement Proposal vote and actual deployment.

Aave V4 is the next major upgrade of the Aave protocol, the largest blockchain-based onchain lending platform. The upgrade is a significant overhaul of the protocol by introducing a modular Hub and Spoke design meant to improve liquidity.

According to the documentation, Aave V4’s Liquidity Hub will act as a unified pool that consolidates supplied assets that Spokes can connect to. Spokes will have individual lending rules, risk parameters, collateral policies, and other user considerations.

In addition to solving the issue of siloed liquidity on the protocol, Aave V4’s new design will allow greater flexibility when it comes to isolating risk profiles, thereby fostering “a broader range of market structures.” It also features deeper integration of Aave’s native GHO stablecoin and a revamped liquidation engine.

“Taken together, these changes evolve Aave beyond a single generalized lending design,” the snapshot proposal reads. “Liquidity depth is maximized, risk is priced with precision, and a wider range of lending activity can be supported onchain, within one framework, while segregating risk. This positions Aave to become the infrastructure for global onchain finance.”

Aave Labs, led by Stani Kulechov, will now publish an Aave Improvement Proposal in preparation for the mainnet launch following a period of community feedback and an official snapshot vote. This includes working with Aave’s security and risk advisors to set final risk parameters, according to the snapshot.

V4 reportedly underwent “roughly 345 days of cumulative security review spanning manual audits, formal verification, invariant testing, fuzzing, and a public security contest, supported by a $1.5 million DAO-ratified security budget.”

Core contributors step back

The move comes amid a series of changes among Aave leadership, including the planned departures of key security contributors BGD Labs and active governance participant Aave Chan Initiative.

Both BDG and ACI announced they would step back from the protocol when their contracts expired after Kulechov published his “Aave Will Win” proposal, which would radically reshape protocol governance.

Kulechov’s proposal included provisions to give the Aave DAO greater control over Aave Labs’ revenue and intellectual property in exchange for a DAO-controlled budget, while also calling on stakeholders to prioritize deployment of Aave V4.

Kulechov has also separately called for streamlining Aave’s governance processes.
