Ethereum-based startup Fileverse unveils open source and private alternative to Google Sheets

Fileverse, the startup making easy-to-use Ethereum-based productivity software, has unveiled its latest product, a decentralized alternative to Google Sheets and Excel.

Like its predecessor product, dDocs, a blockchain-based spin on Google Docs, the new internet-native program is called dSheets, after Google Sheets. (To try either, you can quickly create a new document by typing ddocs.new or dsheets.new into your search bar.)

“Spreadsheets are the backbone of millions of databases & trillions of $ of global capital movements,” Fileverse wrote in an announcement. “They are the most used reactive functional programming language in the world… YET, a duo-poly of proprietary, big tech sh**t software has choked the market for the past 40 years. dSheets changes that.”

Like the cloud-based database tools many are accustomed to, dSheets enables users to read, manage, and write into documents in real time as well as more advanced data-entry functions.

Crypto-specific

Moreover, dSheets unlocks crypto-specific functions like querying data from smart contracts and submitting transactions onchain. Users can import their social graph from decentralized platforms like Farcaster and data from analytics platforms like Dune, and also interact with other onchain protocols using their own API keys. A promotional video shows a user interacting with prediction market Polymarket and also filtering Etherscan data to find Vitalik Buterin’s transactions on a specific date.

Like its Fileverse predecessor, dSheets is fully private and accessible — anyone can create a document and the protocol stores zero user data. The tool is end-to-end encrypted and uses ZK-authentications for private online collaboration, Fileverse said. Currently live on Ethereum mainnet, the Base L2, and Gnosis Chain, dSheets runs using Fileverse middleware and can store data using IPFS, if users want to share their databases with the “community.”

“dSheets is only in v0.1 & will be growing EVERY WEEK,” Fileverse said, noting that the team is looking for community feedback.

Gnosis Chain and venture capital firm Factor led Fileverse’s $1.5 million pre-seed round in 2023.
