Kraken secures MiCA license in Ireland to scale European operations

Crypto exchange Kraken has secured a MiCA license through Ireland, allowing it to offer crypto services across European Economic Area member states.

In a statement released Wednesday, Kraken said it received the license from the Central Bank of Ireland, enabling it to serve users across 30 EEA countries and marking a “pivotal milestone” in its European expansion.

“This license reflects that effort and places us in a strong position to expand our product offering, grow our institutional and retail client base and deliver secure, accessible and fully regulated crypto services to millions more people across the EU,” Arjun Sethi, co-CEO of Kraken, said in the statement.

The crypto exchange noted that the newly obtained MiCA license adds to its compliance efforts in Europe, where it already holds virtual asset service provider registrations in Ireland, Belgium, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland and Spain.

MiCA, which came into full effect at the end of last year, establishes comprehensive guidelines and regulations for crypto assets across the European Union trading bloc.

Coinbase, another global crypto exchange, announced last week that it obtained its MiCA license in Luxembourg. Gemini, owned by the Winklevoss twins, is also in the final stages of obtaining a MiCA license in Malta, according to Reuters. Meanwhile, OKX has selected Malta as its MiCA hub.
