Poland’s Sejm Speaker Włodzimierz Czarzasty announced that lawmakers had begun considering four competing cryptoasset bills after President Karol Nawrocki twice vetoed earlier legislation on the sector.
The chamber opened debate on Tuesday on proposals from the government, President Karol Nawrocki, the Poland 2050 party, and the Confederation party, with second readings scheduled for Thursday, according to a local media report.
The report said the primary distinctions between the government and presidential bills center on the Polish Financial Supervision Authority’s power to block accounts and the scale of statutory penalties. While President Nawrocki’s 108-page proposal maintains a fine of 20 million PLN ($5.5 million) for obstructing inspections, the Ministry of Finance’s 106-page draft increases that maximum penalty to 25 million PLN ($6.9 million).
Parliamentary bills from Poland 2050 and Confederation were also brought to the floor on Tuesday for initial consideration. These proceedings moved forward as Law and Justice (PiS) MPs introduced a separate bill on Monday that seeks to ban cryptoasset activity within Poland, per the report. This new filing followed the withdrawal of support by four PiS parliamentarians for a market regulation bill they had originally submitted in April.
Speaker Czarzasty stated that the Sejm will only process the PiS ban proposal after work on the four primary regulatory bills is concluded, provided the parliamentary club does not withdraw it.
Czarzasty described the situation surrounding cryptoassets as “some kind of devil’s dance” and raised questions about financing linked to zondacrypto, including which political events and lawmakers allegedly received funding.
He also questioned why President Nawrocki had twice vetoed cryptoasset legislation and asked “to what extent are politicians involved in this matter.”
