Asset manager WisdomTree is launching 24/7 trading and instant settlement for its WisdomTree Treasury Money Market Digital Fund (WTGXX), a first for a registered tokenized mutual fund in the U.S., according to an announcement on Tuesday.
“Instant settlement has been one of the true promises of blockchains and RWA tokenization,” Head of Digital Assets at WisdomTree Will Peck said in a statement. “We’re grateful for the constructive engagement with the SEC and FINRA, including the grant of exemptive relief and regulatory approvals necessary to bring this innovation to market.”
The WisdomTree Treasury Money Market Digital Fund is a tokenized, registered open-end mutual fund that invests primarily in short-term U.S. Treasury obligations and other government securities. WTGXX is governed by the Investment Company Act of 1940 and uses a dealer-principal liquidity model, a mechanism where a broker-dealer acts as a principal to buy and sell shares of a mutual fund directly from and to investors using its own balance sheet rather than relying solely on traditional redemption processes.
WisdomTree noted the move “required coordinated regulatory approvals,” and that multiple WisdomTree entities obtained U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission exemptive relief. Additionally, WisdomTree Securities received FINRA approval to expand its broker-dealer activities to include principal trading of registered fund shares.
Exemptive relief is a special permission granted by the SEC to bypass specific provisions of federal securities laws and regulations that would otherwise apply, like under the Investment Company Act of 1940, which often governs mutual funds, closed-end funds, ETFs, and other types of pooled investments.
Settlement will be facilitated by stablecoins, the firm notes. WisdomTree’s stablecoin conversion service includes stablecoins like Circle’s USDC and PayPal’s PYUSD.
WisdomTree is active in the nascent real-world asset space, representing assets worth over $772 million across its multi-chain deployments, according to RWA.xyz. Last month, the firm launched its full suite of tokenized funds on Solana.
“What were once emerging initiatives, including models, tokenized assets and private markets, are now real businesses contributing to momentum today while still early in their growth,” WisdomTree CEO Jonathan Steinberg said when reporting the firm’s most recent quarterly financial returns.
