Open source interoperability network Hyperlane is extending Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC), the first ERC20 token backed 1:1 with Bitcoin, to Solana, according to an announcement on Thursday. The launch will add a canonical way to move the multi-billion-dollar tokenized asset to the active Solana ecosystem.
Hyperlane’s Nexus Bridge will enable holders to transfer native WBTC between Ethereum and Solana, the team wrote in a press release.
“As demand grows for Bitcoin liquidity across high-throughput networks, it’s critical that interoperability is secure, reliable, and permissionless,” said WBTC. “Hyperlane enables us to extend WBTC to Solana in a way that aligns with those standards, giving developers and users seamless access to Bitcoin-backed liquidity.”
Wrapped Bitcoin has been one of the leading tokenized Bitcoin solutions since its launch in January 2019. The asset allows users to represent the value of Bitcoin on chains where BTC cannot natively transfer, like Ethereum and TRON.
The asset, which has an $8 billion market cap, according to The Block’s data, maintains 1:1 reserves with actual bitcoin held in custody by BitGo, one of the firms that first created the product, and BiT Global, a Hong Kong-based regulated custody platform with links to crypto billionaire Justin Sun.
WBTC made waves in 2024 when it was announced that BitGo had entered into a “multi-jurisdictional, multi-institutional” custody model with BiT Global, leading to some projects like MakerDAO and Coinbase to distance themselves from the asset. BitGo previously acted as the sole custodian.
Sun threatened to sue Coinbase for delisting the tokenized asset and launched its competing cbBTC product, but dropped the case.
WBTC remains the largest tokenized version of bitcoin, according to DefiLlama data.
